Men’s Track and Field Places Second at UAA Championships

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted the final day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Sunday and finished second with 162 points. Washington University won the team title with 248 points.

Carnegie Mellon recorded three individual UAA titles on Sunday with two coming in field events and the other on the track. Junior Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:24.37. Also, earning points for the Tartans in the race was freshman Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) with a time of 15:36.80 to place sixth.

The two titles won in the field events were the discus and javelin. Freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) claimed his second UAA title of the championships when he threw the discus a school record distance of 49.05 meters. Junior Marshall Hoebing (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) won the javelin with a career-best throw of 53.35 meters. Senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) earned points in both events for the Tartans when he took fourth in the discus with a toss of 47.38 meters and fifth in the javelin with a mark of 49.76 meters.

Junior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.90 meters. Senior Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and freshman Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) tied for fifth when each jumped 1.85 meters.

The triple jump saw the Tartans take fourth and fifth. Sophomore Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) leapt 13.65 meters and senior Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) jumped 13.20 meters.

Freshman Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) placed second in the 100-meter dash after crossing the line in 11.12. Junior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) also recorded a second-place showing when he finished the 800-meter run in 1:54.42. Freshman Arthur Dzieniszewski (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) finished behind Mills in third with a time of 1:54.97.
