Tartans Earn Career Bests in Team Victory at Bob Shannon Invitational

(GRANVILLE, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the Denison University Bob Shannon Invitational on Saturday, February 2 for the fourth consecutive season with 189.50 points. The men led the team scoring by 121 points over second place Denison. 

Freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed first in the triple jump, breaking his own school record with a jump of 14.28 meters. "I was really excited to get the jump," said Kiefel, "Once I started jumping today, it all seemed to click. I had a good week of practice which translated well to today's meet." Junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) jumped to a second-place finish in the event with a leap of 13.85 meters. Freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) won the long jump, covering 6.88 meters. 

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had a personal record of 15.71 meters in the shot put, placing second overall. Fellow Sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) also scored a personal record, throwing 13.32 meters in the weight throw and placing eighth overall. Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed second in the high jump, clearing 1.85 meters. 

Sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) won the pole vault with a personal best of 4.42 meters. "Coach Stark was such a huge help in getting me to clear that bar today. This was my first competitive meet of the season, and I'm excited going into the rest of the indoor season," said Murphy. Sophomore Dylan Lew (Newtown, Conn. / Newtown) placed third with a vault of 3.81 meters. 

Junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) won both the mile run in a time of 4:25 and the 800-meter run in 2:00. Freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) placed third in the mile with a time of 4:26. Placing first in the 60-meter dash, sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) crossed in a time of 7.03. 

Junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed first in his first collegiate 3,000-meter run finishing in 8:49. Junior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) finished second just six seconds behind Walsh in 8:55. The men's 4x400 team of junior Jacob Hoffman (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Stuyvesant), senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton), freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township), and Bennett Jr. finished second in a time of 3:31. 

The Tartans will compete again next Saturday, February 9 at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke University in Roanoke, Va.
