Tartans Win Third Straight Meet of the Indoor Season

(ROANOKE, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won their third consecutive meet of the season when they topped the field of six at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College this Saturday, February 9. The Tartans defeated second place Washington and Lee and third place Roanoke. This year marked the team's first appearance at the meet. 

"For a major change in our schedule, the results turned out very well," said head coach Gary Aldrich, "We excelled in many areas and had a number of lifetime- and season-best performances today. We continued our progress towards competing well at the University Athletic Association (UAA) meet. I'm especially proud of how everyone competed whether it was against themselves, the tape, or the clock." 

Senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) had a season-best performance with a win in the 800-meter dash in a time of 1:56. "I thought everything went well today. I went out hard and got in some solid work. I know I have a few things to work on," said Mills. Juniors Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) and Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed first and second in the mile run with times of 4:19 and 4:20, respectively. 

Freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) placed first in the long jump with a mark of 6.89 meters, while freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed second after a mark of 6.44 meters. Kiefel won the triple jump for the third time this year with a mark of 13.95 meters. Junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) placed second in the triple jump with 13.45 meters. 

Senior Reed Farber (Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) scored a personal best in the high jump, winning the event and clearing 1.96 meters. Sophomore Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed third in the event with 1.86 meters. Sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) placed second in the pole vault with 4.56 meters. 

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put with a throw of 16.02 meters, while sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed third with a 13.56 meter throw and freshman Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) placed sixth with a mark of 12.02 meters. Stahl also placed second in the weight throw with 13.74 meters. 

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.99 and placed third in the 200-meter dash in 22.53. Freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) ran to a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.42. 

Sweeping the 3,000-meter run, Will Mitchell (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) led the Tartans in first place with a personal best of 8:30, junior Josh Kalapos (Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) was second in 8:39, junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y.) finished just a second behind in 8:40, senior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) finished fourth in 8:50, and senior Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post) closed out the pack in fifth in a time of 8:53. Senior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. Bridgewater- Raritan) won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:32, while junior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Tech) placed second in 15:45. 

The 4x400-meter relay team of Mills, Desir, freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler), and sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) closed out the meet with a second-place finish in a time of 3:28. 

The Tartans will compete again next Friday, February 15 at the Ohio State Indoor Collegiate Meet in Columbus, Ohio, and next Saturday, February 16 at the Mount Union Raider Tune-Up in Alliance, Ohio.
