Kalapos Wins 5,000-Meter in a UAA Record Time at First Day of UAA Championships

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team started off the weekend Saturday at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. The men's team is winning the meet with 61 points, sitting 30 points ahead of second place Washington University.

Junior Josh Kalapos (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt.Lebanon) won the 5,000-meter run, breaking both the UAA indoor meet record and the Carnegie Mellon school record as he crossed in 14:35.95. Kalapos beat the 11-year old school record by eight seconds and a six-year UAA record by almost six seconds, while pulling away from the crowd with three laps to go. "The plan was to go out there and hang with the pack. When it came down to it, I was able to bang out the closing laps," said Kalapos.

The Tartans swept the long jump, freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) placed first with a distance of 6.86 meters. Freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) and junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) tied for second both jumping 6.68 meters.

Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) clinched second-place in the high jump with a personal record of 2.01 meters. His second-place finish was just .03 meters off first place Emory. Sophomore Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed fifth with a performance of 1.88 meters.

Sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 13.63 meters. "Today we had a rough start but ended up with a good finish. We pushed through adversity," said Stahl. Fellow sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had a personal best performance in sixth place, throwing 13.45meters.

The men's distance medley relay team of senior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga), freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler), senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) and junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) placed second in 10:08.01 just 0.68 seconds off of first place Washington University.

A number of Tartans scored in the top eight in preliminary races and will compete Sunday, February 24 at the final day of the UAA Indoor Championships.
