Tartans Win UAA Indoor Championships; Bennett Jr. Wins 60-Meter and 200-Meter

(WALTHAM, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Brandeis University Sunday, February 24. The men defeated second place Washington University for their third UAA Indoor crown, with several personal best and school-record performances.

"Today was an incredible team effort. The men did a great job in every performance. They competed extremely well. Between Marvin's wins in the 60 meters and 200 meters and points we scored in the seventh and eighth positions, every point counted towards our win," said head coach Gary Aldrich. 

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash on the final day of the championships in school-record times. Bennett Jr. had a personal-best time of 22.12 in the 200-meter and an additional personal-best time of 6.95 in the 60-meter dash. 

In the triple jump, freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) continued his winning performances this season with a jump of 14.14 meters to earn his first UAA Championship, and junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) followed in second place with a jump of 14.07 meters. The triple jumpers' performances marked their second top three finishes of the weekend.

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put by an impressive 0.82 meters with a personal-best throw of 15.66 meters. Two other Tartans scored in the event with Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placing fourth with 13.44 meters and Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) placing eighth with 11.99 meters. 

Senior Will Mitchell (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) held off several close competitors in the 3,000-meter run to finish second in a personal-best time of 8:28. Mitchell's performance places him third on the Carnegie Mellon indoor top-five performance list. To follow his stunning 5,000-meter victory on Friday, junior Josh Kalapos (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter in a time of 8:28. Junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) placed seventh in a personal-best time of 8:34. 

Sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) finished second in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.43 meters. Fellow sophomore Dylan Lew (Newtown, Conn. / Newtown) placed sixth in a three-way tie having cleared a height of 3.98 meters. 

In the mile, junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) ran to a second-place finish with a personal record of 4:12. Junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) followed Yukevich in fourth place with a time of 4:16. Senior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) scored points with an eighth-place finish, winning his heat in 4:22. 

Senior Isaac Mills placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55. Freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed sixth in the 400-meter dash in 50.81. 

Several Tartans will compete again at the Polar Bear Last Chance Qualifier at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, next Saturday March 2.
