Six Tartans to Compete at NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Six Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field athletes have received an invite to compete at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The six representing Carnegie Mellon is the most in program history to appear at the championship event. Prior to this season, the Tartans have had no more than two individual competitors or an individual and a relay compete at the championships in a given year.

Senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) returns to the national meet for the third straight season with his second consecutive appearance in the 800-meter run. Mills was also part of the DMR that competed at the 2017 championships along with junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) who returns to the national meet this season running the mile. Joining the repeat performers this season is senior Will Mitchell (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) (3,000-meter), junior Josh Kalapos (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt.Lebanon) (5,000-meter), sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) (200-meter) and freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) (triple jump).

Mills was selected following his performance this past Saturday at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet. Mills recorded a season-best time of 1:54.21, which converts to 1:52.60 because of running on a 200-meter flat track Saturday and this year's championships are ran on a bank track. His time currently seeds him 18th at the meet.

Yukevich recorded a career-best time in the mile of 4:12.76 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships. His converted time of 4:09.59 seeds him sixth.

Mitchell's and Kalapos' top times of the season in the 5,000 and 3,000 meters came at the UAA Championships and were both person-bests. Mitchell ran 8:28.11 in the 3,000-meter and his converted time is 8:22.27 seeding him 16th. Kalapos ran to a UAA title with an Association record time of 14:35.95. His converted time of 14:26.67 seeds him seventh.

Another qualifying time at the UAA Championships was by Bennett Jr. The sophomore broke the school record in the 200-meter dash on his way to the UAA title with a time of 22.12. The sophomore's converted time of 21.73 seeds him 18th.

Kiefel will enter the championships with the 14th-best jump in the nation. He posted a school record mark of 14.37 meters at The Ohio State Indoor Collegiate Meet.

The meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center with the University of Massachusetts Boston and the City of Boston serving as hosts.
