Tartans Perform Well at Westminster Invitational

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Westminster College Invitational on Saturday. Many Tartans placed among the top five against a field of Division II and Division III competitors.

Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed fifth in the high jump clearing 1.89 meters. In the triple jump, junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) placed second with a jump of 14.21 meters, while sophomore Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) took fifth with 13.25 meters. Freshmen Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) and Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed third and fourth in the long jump with distances of 6.83 and 6.77, respectively.

Sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) tied for third in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.45 meters. Sophomore Marvin Bennett (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) took second in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.84, and also took third in the 200-meter in a time of 22.11. Freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.71.

In the 5,000-meter, senior Jacob Halasowski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) and junior Edward Goebe (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College HS) took third and fourth with times of 15:19 and 15:25, respectively. Junior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) won the steeplechase in a time of 10:02, while freshman Aiden O'Donnell (Canton, Conn. / Canton) took third in 10:18.

Freshman Noah Castor (Ewing, N.J. / Ewing) placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 47.51 meters. Fellow freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 57.54.

The Tartans' 4x400-meter relay team of Heoseph Desir, Tyler Waters, sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) , and sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) won the race in a time of 3:25. The 4x100-meter relay team of Desir, Varun Narayan, junior Jamie Greenwell (Celina, Texas / McKinney Christian Academy), and Marvin Bennett placed second in 42.15.

The Tartans will compete next at the Slippery Rock Last Chance Qualifier hosted by Slippery Rock University on April 18.
