Seven Tartans Place First at SRU Open

(SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Slippery Rock University Open on Thursday. The men turned in seven first place finishes in the unscored event.

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won the 200-meter dash in a personal record time of 21.76. Fellow sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) took second in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.81.

Freshman Aidan O'Donnell (Canton, Conn. / Canton) took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:22. Senior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) won the 1,500-meter run in a season-best time of 4:02.

The Tartans' 4x400-meter team of CJ Nilsen (McKeesport, Pa. / Serra Catholic), Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch), Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier), and Cai placed third in a time of 3:35.

In the long jump, freshman Varun Nayaran (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) took first with a jump of 6.91 meters, while junior Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) took third with 6.29 meters, and freshman Tarik Taoufik (Butler, Pa. / Butler) placed fifth with 6.06 meters. Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) won the high jump clearing 1.93 meters.

In the triple jump, freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed third with 14.08 meters, and junior Fred Dauphin placed fourth with 13.89.

Sophomore Bram Miller won both the discus with a toss of 50.08 meters and the shot put with 15.85 meters. Fellow sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed second in the hammer with a throw of 45.65 meters. Senior Marshall Hoebing (Mickleton, N.J. / Kingsway Regional) placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 55.89 meters.

The Tartans will travel to Atlanta on April 27 for the University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Emory University.
