Tartans Stand in Second After Day One of UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team began action at the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Emory University. After seven scored events, the Tartans are second with 75 points, just ten points behind first place Washington University.

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put by 0.88 meters with a throw of 16.05. Sophomore Logan Stahl (Oil City, Pa. / Oil City) placed seventh, while freshman Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) placed eighth with a toss of 12.82 meters. Stahl also took second in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 49.13.

In the long jump, freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) won with a jump of 7.08 meters, the third-best performance in school history. Freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) took fifth with a jump of 6.55 meters, and junior Dhroovaa Khannan (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) placed seventh with 6.30 meters.

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) won the 100-meter dash preliminary in a school record time of 10.81. The sophomore also placed second in the 200-meter preliminary in a time of 21.76.

Freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed seventh in the preliminary race of the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.71. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) took fourth in the preliminary with a time of 56.18, and freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) took sixth with a time of 56.79.

In the 800-meter preliminary freshman Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) placed fourth in a time of 1:54, while senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) took sixth in 1:55.

Junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while fellow junior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) took eighth just seconds behind in 9:43.

The Tartan's 4x800 meter relay team of junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard), junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan), Graham Eversden and Isaac Mills took first place in 7:40, the second best time in school history.

In the Pole Vault sophomore Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) took second clearing 4.52 meters, and freshman Brian Lane (Frederick, Md. / Oakdale) placed sixth with a personal-best height of 4.02 meters.

Senior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters in a time of 32:15.

Action will continue on Sunday with four more field events and the finals of eight individual races and two relays.
