Miller and Bennett Jr. Garner Year End Men’s Track and Field UAA Honors

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomores Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) when the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field awards were announced Wednesday. Miller was named Most Outstanding Performer in the field events, while Bennett Jr. was Most Outstanding Performer in the running events. Both played a major contribution in helping lead the Tartans to a second-place finish at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Miller, last season's UAA Rookie of the Year, turned in another school-record performance in the discus throw, which won the event with a mark of 51.79 meters. The sophomore also defended his shot put title with a championship throw of 16.05 meters, .88 meters better than second place.

Bennett Jr. won three UAA titles this past weekend when he became just the second Tartan ever to win the 100-meter dash and the second Tartan ever to sweep both sprinting events, a feat not accomplished since 1991 by Jeff Illian. Bennett Jr.'s time in the 100-meter dash tied the school record at 10.70 set in 2003. His time of 21.76 in the 200-meter race was .24 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and matched his career-best performance. Both victories came on the heels of anchoring the 4x100-meter relay to a nearly half-second victory. The 4x100 win was the first for the Tartans since 2012 and just the second in school history.

Both Miller and Bennett Jr. earned the same accolades following the indoor season this year.
