Three Men Named CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field and cross country athletes have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Google Cloud Men's Cross Country/Track and Field Academic All-District selections. Junior Josh Kalapos (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt.Lebanon) and sophomore Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) participate on both teams while sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) competes on the track and field team following the fall playing football.
All three were selected to the District 4 team, comprised of all the Division III schools in Pennsylvania, and move on to the national ballot for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration. To be eligible for the award, athletes must be starters or significant reserves in at least their sophomore season and carry a minimum GPA of 3.30.
Kalapos carries a 3.84 GPA in computer science and has been a teaching assistant at Carnegie Mellon for Parallel Computer Architecture and Programming and was a Robotics teaching assistant for the Summer Academy of Mathematics and Sciences. He has previously interned for Zensors and Zulama and will be Google this summer. In competition, Kalapos set a new University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor record in the 5k when he won the event this season with a time of 14:35.95. His time earned him selection to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships where he placed 19th. Kalapos also had a standout cross country season placing 11th at the Mideast Regional and helping the team to an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Karee was injured through the track and field season but was All-Mideast Region in cross country after finishing 32nd at the regional meet for the championship Tartans. He was seventh on the team at the NCAA Championships where the team finished 18th. Last summer he interned for Valicenti Advisory Services while he was a peer tutor for academic development this year on campus. He holds a 4.0 in mechanical engineering after four semesters of work.
Miller is also a mechanical engineer who maintains a 3.62 GPA while participating in three sport seasons. This year, Miller was named the UAA Indoor and Outdoor Most Outstanding Performer in the field events. He repeated as the UAA discus and shot put champion this season after winning the shot put during the indoor season. His marks during the outdoor season earned him placement at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he placed 10th in the discus and 13th in the shot put, becoming the only Tartan male to compete in two field events on the national stage. The sophomore also set the school record in the discus throw this season and is a six-time All-Region honoree.
