Kiefel Breaks Triple Jump School Record

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field program hosted its annual invitational on Saturday, as the Cardinal and Gray welcomed Division I University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Robert Morris University along with Division II Slippery Rock to Gesling Stadium.

Junior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed third in the triple jump with a record jump of 14.59 meters. The junior topped Fred Dauphin's mark of 14.21 meters set in 2019.

Senior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a person-best time of 9:17.11 while graduate student Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) placed second in 9:34.38.

The Tartans swept the 3,000-meter run with senior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) crossing first with a personal-best time of 8:36.94. Juniors Naren Karur (Santa Clara, Calif. / Saint Francis) and Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) finished second and third with personal-best times of 8:39.42 and 8:41.76, respectively.

The 1,500-meter run saw graduate student Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) cross second in 3:58.89 with freshman Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) placing third with a time of 4:03.23.

Junior Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) took second in the 800-meter in a time of 1:55.58 with sophomore Leland Davies (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick High School) crossing fourth in 1:57.83.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) took second with a time of 56.59. Senior Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) also recorded a second-place showing when he crossed the line in 22.30 in the 200-meter dash.

Senior Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and sophomore Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) placed second and third in the shot put with throws of 15.70 meters and 14.26 meters, respectively. Miller later won the discus with a toss of 48.52 meters.

Senior Marc Edwards (North Versailles, Pa. / East Allegheny) placed fourth in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 44.86 meters. Edwards also turned in a person-best distance in the javelin with a throw of 48.81 meters.

The Tartans will travel to Slippery Rock University on Saturday, April 3 to compete in the Dave Labor Invitational.
