Kiefel Breaks 28-Year Long Jump School Record, Two Other School Records Set at WVU Last Chance Meet

(MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team headed south to Morgantown, West Virginia on Saturday to compete in the West Virginia University Last Chance Meet.

Junior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) won the long jump with a school record jump of 7.36 meters. His distance broke a 28-year old school record which tops Kenny Pugh's mark of 7.29 meters set in 1993. Kiefel started the day winning the triple jump with a distance of 14.79 meters, topping his previous school record mark of 14.65 meters.

Senior Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) won the shot put, breaking his own school record with a mark of 17.84 meters. His previous best was 17.11 meters. The senior and placed second in the discus with a throw of 44.06 meters.

Sophomore Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) won the hammer throw after tossing the element 46.72 meters. Senior Marc Edwards (North Versailles, Pa. / East Allegheny) took third in the javelin with a throw of 46.09 meters. Senior Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) also competed in the triple jump and recorded a mark of 13.40 meters. The senior also cleared the bar in the high jump at 1.85 meters.

Graduate student Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best 9:15.97 while senior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) placed second in 9:18.93.

Junior Graham Eversden (Chandler, Ariz. / Chandler) won the 800-meter run crossing in 1:52.72 with graduate student Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) running to a season-best time of 3:57.21 to place second in the 1,500-meter run.

Freshman Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.10. Freshman Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 15.81 while senior Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) also took second with a time of 10.99 in the 100-meter dash.

The Tartans will compete at the All-Atlantic Conference Championships on May 19-20.
