Five Tartans Selected to Compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Five Carnegie Mellon University track and field athletes have earned a place to compete at the 2021 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with two selected to compete in two events. The championship meet will take place at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina, from May 27-29.

Senior Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) will return to the NCAA Championships for the second time and will compete in the discus throw and shot put for the second time. The senior is currently ranked 14th in the discus throw with a mark of 50.04 meters and second in the shot put with a career-best and school record throw of 18.01 meters.

Junior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy), who has competed for the Tartans for two seasons, will be on the national stage for the second time as he competed in the triple jump at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The school-record holder in both the long jump and triple jump this spring is currently ranked fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.93 meters and tied at the top of the rankings in the long jump with a distance of 7.54 meters. 

Senior Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) and graduate student Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) will both compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and make their first appearance at the national meet. Branch-Shaw's time of 9:08.97 pits him eighth overall while Hartshorne's time of 9:12.98 is 15th. Both times are career bests for the veteran Tartan runners.

Freshman Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) has had a stellar rookie campaign and is currently third in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 52.49.
