Tartans Lead After First Day of UAA Championships, OBroin and Breidenbach Win UAA Titles

(CLEVLAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Saturday. The two-day championship meet is being hosted by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The Tartans are leading the meet with 56 points.

Senior Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) won the 5,000-meter run, breaking both the UAA indoor meet record and the Carnegie Mellon school record as he crossed in 14:23.22. OBroin beat the old school record by 12.73 seconds and the UAA record by 11.72 seconds.

Freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) won the weight throw with a distance of 17.89 meters with junior Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) placing seventh with a throw of 14.27 meters.

Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) tied the school record in the long jump with a leap of 7.17 meters to place second. His jump ties Rai Walters's mark which was set during the 2016 season. Junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) and sophomore Thomas Rich placed third and fourth with jumps of 6.98 and 6.84 meters, respectively. Both marks are career-best jumps for Halkias and Rich.

Freshman Ethan Higgs (Evansville, Ind. / FJ Reitz) placed fourth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.89 meters. Freshman Sebastian Sanso (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) cleared the bar at 1.84 meters to place seventh.

The Tartans' distance medley relay team of freshman Eamon Brady (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South), junior Leland Davies (East Brunswick, N.J. / East Brunswick High School), freshman Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) and freshman Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) finished second with a time of 10:09.15.

The final day of the championships will begin with the long jump at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 27.
