Narayan Earns All-America Honors, Johnson and Seletskiy Advance to Finals at 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships

(GENEVA, Ohio) – During the first day of the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, senior Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team earned All-America. The three-day championships are being held at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Narayan becomes the second Tartan to garner All-America honors in the long jump when he placed seventh with a mark of 7.19 meters on his sixth and final jump Thursday afternoon. In 1983, Ivan Juzang placed sixth for the Tartans in the event with a jump of 7.13 meters. Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) placed 13th with a jump of 7.00 meters.

Graduate student Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) and freshmen Aleksei Seletskiy (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) both qualified on Thursday for the finals in their respective event, Johnson in the 400-meter hurdles and Seletskiy in the 1,500-meter run. Johnson placed third in his heat with a personal-best time of 52.55 while Seletskiy crossed in 3:51.25 in the preliminaries and was the 12th and final runner. Johnson will run in the finals on Saturday at 2:25 p.m. after Seletskiy returns to the track at 12:35 p.m. for his final run.

Following the first day of the decathlon, which five events took place, sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) is currently in seventh in the field of 20 with 3,576 points. Rich's best event on Thursday was the shot put where he placed sixth with a person-best throw of 12.30 meters. The sophomore also turned in a personal-best time in the 100-meter dash crossing in 11.18.

Graduate student Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) competed in the discus and placed 10th with a throw of 48.94 meters.

Rich will start the day for the Tartans on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the final five events of the decathlon. Miller will compete in the shot put starting at 11:30 a.m. with sophomore Alex Ivanov (Newton, Mass. / Newton) running the preliminaries of the 800-meter run at 4:15 p.m.
