Tartans Compete at Three Events to Open Indoor Season

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's indoor track and field team opened its 2022-23 season competing at three different meets over the weekend. On Friday the Cardinal and Gray had members compete at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker while others took part in the 9th Annual Spartan Holiday Lidlifter at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday with one athlete competing at the Bucknell University Bison Opener on Friday and Saturday in the heptathlon.

Top Performances at Youngstown:

  • Junior David Durdaller won the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 14:43.69.
  • Sophomore Cody Breidenbach took third in the weight throw with a toss of 16.58 meters.
  • Turning in a fourth-place finish in the 800-metr run was junior Andrew McGovern with a personal-best time of 1:54.75.
  • The mile run saw sophomore Aleksei Seletskiy cross with a time of 4:20.50 to finish fourth.

Top Performance at Bucknell:

  • Sophomore Casey Potrebic placed fifth in the heptathlon with 4,088 points, a new personal-best score. The sophomore won the shot put with a career-best throw of 11.88 meters.
  • Potrebic took second in the pole vault on Saturday morning after clearing the bar at a personal-best height of 4.25 meters.

Top Performances at Case Western Reserve:

  • Freshman Christian Duckworth won the pole vault clearing the bar at 4.25 meters.
  • Senior Bailey O'Malley won the weight throw with a mark of 14.59 meters and then tossed the shot put 13.54 meters to place third.
  • In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Micah Nowlin crossed in 9.05 to place second.
  • Junior Austin Weltz took third in the 400-meter race with a time of 51.87.

Up Next:

  • The Tartans will compete again at the Youngstown State University Collegiate Invitational presented by Southwoods Health on Friday, January 20 before taking part in the Spire Midwest Open on Saturday, January 21.
