Seven Tartans to Compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team had seven athletes earn selection to the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships set to be held from May 25 through May 27 at Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, New York.

This marks the fourth straight outdoor championships that the Tartans will have three or more athletes competing while four of the seven will be making their second appearance at the championships.

Junior Andrew McGovern will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior earned All-America honors in the event after placing sixth at the 2021 championships. He currently has the seventh fastest time entering the race at 52.67.

Junior Thomas Rich will compete in the decathlon for the second straight season after becoming the first Tartans a year ago to qualify in the decathlon. He earned selection to the meet with a school record score of 6,556 that ranks 10th in the nation.

Sophomore Cody Breidenbach will return to the championships competing in the hammer throw where he ranks 18th with a school record mark of 58.35 meters. Last season, Breidenbach finished 10th at the championships.

Junior Alex Ivanov will compete in the 800-meter run for the second straight outdoor championships and currently ranks 18th nationally with a time of 1:50.21. Last season, Ivanov finished 17th at the championships.

Making their first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships are seniors Bailey O'Malley and Elijah Sech along with sophomore Colin McLaughlin. O'Malley will be competing in the shot put where he currently ranks 19th with a throw of 16.36 meters. Sech will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and ranks 22nd with a school record time of 9:03.87 with McLaughlin competing in the 1,500-meter run qualifying with a time of 3:47.71.

The first event at the championships is the men's 100-meter dash of the decathlon and set to start at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 25.
