Tartans Compete at Duquesne Duals to Open Season

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team opened its 2016 season at the Duquesne University Duals on Saturday, September 3 in Schenley Park. The Tartans defeated Youngstown State University as they competed against four Division I schools.

The Tartans were led by freshman Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa./La Salle College) who finished the 8K race 13th overall in a time of 26:56.8. Following Goebel was junior Jordan Safer (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) who crossed 15th in a time of 27:14.1.

Four runners crossed the line before a group of Tartans finished within a five-second span. Leading the group was freshman Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in a time of 27:30.5 with sophomore Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finishing in 27:32.8. Sophomore Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md./Urbana) was next to cross the finish line for the Tartans in 27:33.4 with fellow sophomore Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) on his heels in 27:33.9. The last of the group to finish was senior Steven Kool (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology) in 27:35.7.

The Tartans will be back on a race course on Saturday, September 17 when they travel to Latrobe, Pennsylvania, for the Saint Vincent Invitational. The race is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
