Tartans Qualify for Nationals with Second-Place Showing at NCAA Mideast Regional

(NEWVILLE, Pa.) – The 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Champtionships after placing second at the 2017 Mideast Regional Championships on Saturday, November 11, hosted by Dickinson College in Newville, Pa. The Tartans finished second in a field of 57 teams with 96 points. Third-ranked Haverford finished in first with 25 points and 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins placed third with 103 points.

Junior Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) led the Tartans, as he finished 14th with a time of 25:35.7.  Junior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was next to cross the line for the Cardinal and Gray in 16th place overall in 25:37.5 with sophomore Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) finishing 18th with a time of 25:47.2.

In 21st place was senior Jordan Safer (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) who finished strong with a time of 25:49.0, crossing before another runner by four tenths of a second. Sophomore Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan/American School in Japan) followed a few seconds behind Safer, finishing in 27th place in 25:51.2.  Sophomore Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and junior Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md./Urbana) finished sixth and seventh for the Tartans and 44th and 61st overall with times of 26:15.5 and 26:41.5, respectively.

The Tartans move on to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships for the fourth consecutive season. The meet will be held on Saturday, November 18 in Elsah, Illinois.
