Tartans Win Second Straight Mideast Regional Championship

(BETHLEHEM, Pa.) – The fourth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships for the second straight year Saturday. The men finished with all seven runners in the top 20 of the race, with an overall score of 55 points, 21 points ahead of second place Johns Hopkins University.

Leading the Tartans, junior Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) finished in fifth place overall in a time of 24:50. "I was really happy with how the team did today. We're all focused now on performing well at nationals next weekend."

A Tartans' pack of four runners took 11th through 14th place. Senior Evan Yukevich was second for the Tartans finishing 11th overall in a time of 25:12. In third for the Tartans, senior Edward Goebel (Abington, Pa. / La Salle College) finished in 12th place in 25:14. Fellow senior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) was just a second behind Goebel in 13th place with a time of 25:15. Sophomore Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) closed out the pack in 14th place in a time of 25:17.

Senior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) was sixth for the Cardinal and Gray in 18th place in 25:26. Senior Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) closed out the Tartans' top seven in 19th overall in a time of 25:27.

All seven runners were named to the Mideast All-Region team for placing in the top 35 of the race.

As the DIII Mideast Champions, the Tartans have an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships Saturday, November 23. The 2019 DIII NCAA Championships will be hosted in Louisville, Kentucky at "Tom" Sawyer State Park on Saturday, November 23.
