Tartans Win Second Straight UAA Championship

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team won the 2021 University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Cross Country Championship Saturday morning at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York. The Tartans placed five runners in the top 20 on the 8k course to win the race by 12 points over Washington University in St. Louis. The meet victory marks the sixth time in school history the Tartans have won the UAA Championships and the second straight.

Senior Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) placed second individually with a time of 25:40.0. Crossing third and four-tenths of a second behind OBroin with a time of 25:40.4 was graduate student Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame). Freshman Matthew Coyle (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) also placed in the top 10 with a sixth-place showing after crossing in 25:48.1. Coyle also earned first-year UAA Rookie of the Year honors as the top first-year athlete to cross the finish line.

Crossing the line in fourth and fifth for the Cardinal and Gray were junior Elijah Sech (San Clemente, Calif. / San Clemente) and freshmen Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) with times of 26:17.5 and 26:27.9, respectively. Sech placed 16th and McLaughlin 20th.

OBroin, Karee and Coyle earned All-UAA First Team for their place.

Head coach Tim Connelly and assistant coaches Adam Colorito and Curtis Watro were named UAA Men's Coaching Staff of the Year. The honor is the fourth for Connelly and his staff and second consecutive.

The Tartans will next race in the NCAA Mideast Regional at Big Spring High School in Newton, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, November 13.
