Tartans Earn Third Straight Automatic Bid to NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – By winning the 2021 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship this past Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team automatically qualified for the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships which will be hosted by Spalding University at the Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, November 20. It marks the Tartans seventh straight team appearance at the championships and 14th in the last 15 years.

Carnegie Mellon won their regional meet for the third straight time and did so this year by placing all seven runners in the top 26, as they all garnered Mid-Atlantic All-Region honors. The Tartans, who won the program's fifth regional championship since 2008, will enter the meet ranked 11th nationally and will race on the same course where the program placed 18th at the 2019 Championships.

Graduate student Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) and senior Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) have led the Tartans all year and are the only Tartans to have run on the national stage. This year's race will mark the third appearance for both athletes who also ran at the 2018 and 2019 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.

The men's race will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET with the women's race set to start at 12:00 p.m. ET.
