Tartans Place 12th at NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships; Karee Earns All-America

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team closed the season with a 12th-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. The championships were hosted by Spalding University on the 8k course at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. This marked the Tartans seventh straight team appearance at the championships and 14th in the last 15 years. It is the highest finish for the Tartans since placing 12th in 2009.

Graduate student Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) paced the Tartans with a time of 24:06.6 and earned All-America after placing 17th individually in a field of 289 runners. Karee is the first Tartan to earn All-America since Evan Gates in 2011. Gates that year finished 28th.

Freshmen Colin McLaughlin (Stamford, Conn. / Westhill) was the second to cross, as he placed 53rd with a time of 24:32.0. Classmate Matthew Coyle (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) and junior Elijah Sech (San Clemente, Calif. / San Clemente) finished third and fourth for the Cardinal and Gray. Coyle crossed in 24:42.4 to place 84th and Sech placed 121st with a time of 24:57.7. Freshman Eamon Brady (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) rounded out the scoring and crossed in 25:43.0.

Senior Michael OBroin (Park Ridge, Ill. / Saint Ignatius College Prep) and sophomore Charlie Murphy (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) also competed and finished with times of 25:43.8 and 25:51.9, respectively.
