(WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team opened its inaugural season in Winter Haven, Florida, with two games on Sunday, March 10 against Beloit College and Wheaton (Mass.) College. The first game, which was played under protest by the Tartans, finished with Beloit winning, 6-2. After a short break, the Tartans then faced the Lyons, falling 5-4.
Game 1: Beloit 6, Carnegie Mellon 2
Against Beloit, freshman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) led the offense with two hits and an RBI while freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) knocked in the other run for the Tartans. Freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) struck out nine batters in 5.2 innings of relief work while also recording one hit in three at bats with a run scored.
With the Tartans trailing 6-2 in the seventh, freshman Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) hit a pinch-hit single to lead off the inning. Schwartz was later called for runner interference on a ground ball to second base, which was protested by head coach Monica Harrison. After a 20-minute delay, the Buccaneers were able to get out of the inning after a single by Song and a lineout by freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes).
Game 2: Wheaton 5, Carnegie Mellon 4
The Tartans trailed Wheaton 4-0 before rallying for four runs in the fourth inning. Senior Rae Lasko (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) hit a bases loaded double to left center field to score two runs. Freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge), who reached on line drive to the pitcher before Lasko's double, also scored on the play when home plate was left uncovered following the throw in from left center field. The fourth run of the inning was scored by Lasko on a wild pitch.
Freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King), Jette-Kouri and freshman Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) each recorded two hits against the Lyons while Schwartz stole a base. Schwartz pitched 5.0 innings, surrendering seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Tartans will continue action on Monday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m. against Arcadia University.
