Pederson Homers Twice; McGee Throws No Hitter in Daily Split

(WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) – Freshman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) hit two home runs and freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) pitched a five-inning no hit shutout as the Carnegie Mellon University softball team split action on the final day of the 10-game spring trip to Florida. Freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) added offensive power with a 6-for-7 day with five RBIs and her second home run of the season.

Game 1: Haverford 12, Carnegie Mellon 6

The Tartans registered 12 hits against the Fords but couldn't string them together scoring a single run in innings one and three before three crossed the plate for the Tartans in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) was 4-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs while Johnson connected for two singles and a double with her only out coming on a deep fly ball that the left fielder caught while falling over the fence.

Pederson's first home run of the day came in the sixth inning with the Tartans trailing 12-3. With two outs, freshman Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) struck a line drive to left that was mishandled allowing her to reach second safely. Freshman Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va./George C. Marshall) entered to pinch run and advanced to third on a passed ball before Pederson lifted a hit over the center field fence to cut the deficit to seven.

The final run of the game for the Tartans came in the seventh when Hu scored from second base with two outs on an infield single up the middle by Johnson.

Game 2: Carnegie Mellon 10, Eastern Connecticut State 0

McGee's no-hitter came against Warriors and included nine strikeouts to bring her rookie total to 34 in six appearances. Johnson, freshman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J./Roxbury) and senior Renee Madrigal (Norwalk, Calif./St. Paul) each recorded more than one hit with Johnson reaching safely three times including a three-run home run in the first inning to put the Tartans ahead 3-0.

Song picked up her first double of the season in the second inning which scored Scheinman who walked with two outs. In the third inning, Madrigal, Johnson and freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif./Westridge) all singled with Madrigal scoring on an errant throw. Later in the inning, McGee hit a sacrifice fly that scored Johnson after the Tartans pulled off a double steal.

The Tartans scored four more runs in the top of the fifth with three coming off an opposite field home run by Pederson to right field. Song then singled in the final run after freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and Scheinman reached on singles.

The Tartans will break from action until Tuesday, March 26 when they host Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania. The first game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.
