Tartans Split Home Doubleheader with Penn State Behrend

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26 splitting action winning game one, 9-0 in five innings, before falling 9-1 in six innings in game two. The games were played at Seton Hill University with the Tartans moving to 5-7 for the year and the Lions to 7-7.

Game 1: Carnegie Mellon 9, Behrend 0

Freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) earned her third victory on the mound allowing one hit while striking out seven in five innings of work. Four Tartans recorded multiple hits in the game with freshman first baseman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman shortstop Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) also had two RBIs with two hits in three at bats.

Behrend loaded the bases in the first inning but McGee got Alayna Derzak to ground out to second base for the third out without runs scoring. The Tartans then scored two in the bottom of the first when Hu reached on an infield single and advanced on a bad throw before scoring on a single to left by freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge). With two outs, Pederson singled through the left side scoring Jette-Kouri who stole third base during the previous at bat.

The Tartans tacked on a run in the second when freshman second baseman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) grounded into a fielder's choice that advanced senior Rae Lasko (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) to third who ended up scoring on a throwing error by the first baseman.

Six runs followed for the Tartans in the fourth inning when they batted around. Freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) stole home for the eighth run of the game while Lasko hit in the ninth run with a single down the right field line.

Game 2: Behrend 9, Carnegie Mellon 1

With the score tied 1-1 after the first inning, Behrend unleashed four runs in the second when Carson Hauser hit an inside the park home run to score three with one out. Katie Gozzard tripled down the left field line and scored when Lauren Olevnik doubled to left center. A fifth run came in the third inning before three additional runs in the sixth finished off the game for the Lions.

The Tartans scattered four hits against A.J. Nichols who earned her fifth win of the season.

Next up for the Tartans is University Athletic Association (UAA) games at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The Tartans will face the Eagles (12-4) in back-to-back doubleheaders beginning on Friday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m.
