Tartans Open UAA Play at Emory

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team began University Athletic Association (UAA) play at Emory University with a doubleheader on Friday, March 29. The Eagles, who entered the day 14-4, picked up two wins (6-2 and 17-1, five innings) against the now 5-9 Tartans.

Game 1: Emory 6, Carnegie Mellon 2

The Tartans put six hits in play against sophomore Madison Schaefer (7-1) scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman designated player Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) singled to center field with one out and later scored from third on a single to right field by freshman first baseman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford). In the fifth inning, freshman center fielder Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) rocked her first home run of the season bringing the score to 6-2.

Emory got on the board first in the second inning with four runs against freshman pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach). McGee, now 3-2 on the season, later gave up two runs in the fourth inning. The right hander surrendered seven hits while walking five and striking out one.

Game 2: Emory 17, Carnegie Mellon 1

Senior pitcher Toko Miller (5-1) scattered three Tartan hits in 5.0 innings. The Tartans scored in the top of the first when freshman catcher Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) doubled to center, scoring freshman third baseman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) from second after she reached on a fielder's choice following a single by freshman second baseman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury). Jette-Kouri had the third hit of the game in the fifth inning when she connected for a pinch-hit single.

The Tartans and Eagles face each other again for a doubleheader on Saturday in Atlanta beginning at 1:00 p.m.
