Tartans Sweep Saint Vincent in Non-Conference Action

(LATROBE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept two games at Saint Vincent College on Wednesday, April 10 to advance to 8-14 for the season. Freshman pitcher Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) earned a 3-1 victory in game one while freshman pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) was the winning pitcher in game two by a 6-4 score after nine innings.

Freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) knocked in four runs while freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) was 4-for-8 with three doubles.

Game 1: Carnegie Mellon 3, Saint Vincent 1

Freshman pitcher Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) earned her second victory of the season allowing one run on five hits to the Bearcats while freshman pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) earned her first save. The Tartans scored twice in the top of the third inning before taking a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning. In the second inning, Jette-Kouri singled for the second time in the game but this time knocked in two runs. In the sixth, Johnson doubled to right center scoring freshman shortstop Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) who reached on an infield single to second base.

Game 2: Carnegie Mellon 6, Saint Vincent 4 (9 Innings)

Three hits in the third inning led to a 1-0 advantage for the Tartans when Hu singled in freshman right fielder Agnes Zhou (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) from second. Zhou collected the first hit of the inning with a single between third base and shortstop. Freshman second baseman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) also singled in the inning, her first of two hits in the game.

The Tartans tied the game at 2-all in the top of the seventh inning when the Bearcats committed two errors, allowing a run to score.

Both teams scored in their respective half of the eighth inning when runners were placed on second to start the inning due to the international tiebreaker rule.

The Tartans plated three runners in the top of the ninth while surrendering just one in the bottom half to earn the 6-4 victory. Song collected an RBI to give the Tartans a 4-3 lead with no outs before Jette-Kouri singled in two more runs for a three-run cushion. After Saint Vincent scored on a first-and-third situation, McGee gave up one hit and then retired three straight with the tying run on base for her fifth victory of the season. For the game, McGee struck out a season-high 14 batters while all runs for Saint Vincent were unearned.

The Tartans will host their first University Athletic Association (UAA) games when Washington University in St. Louis visits the Pittsburgh area for four games this weekend. Action begins Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Tartans' home field at UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania.
