Tartans Squander Leads, Fall Twice to WashU

(TRAFFORD, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, April 12 for a doubleheader at its home field UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania. The Bears were able to come-from-behind in both games to steal two road wins by 5-3 and 7-3 scores.

Game 1: WashU 5, Carnegie Mellon 3

Freshman pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) surrendered all five runs, three earned, while giving up six hits and striking out six batters. The Tartans collected five hits off Madison Denton who moved to 7-4 with the win. Each team scored a run in the first inning with the Tartans taking a 2-1 advantage in the third off stolen bases and an error by the Bears.

In the fifth inning, the Tartans added to their lead when freshman center fielder Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) tripled down the left field line with one out. Freshman second baseman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) then grounded out to second, scoring Faille. The Bears later rallied for four runs in the seventh inning and then closed out the game with a fly out double play by the right fielder.

Game 2: WashU 7, Carnegie Mellon 3 (6 innings due to rain)

Freshman catcher Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) had two extra-base hits in the game but was stranded in both the first inning and the sixth inning. Once again, both teams scored in the first inning and the Tartans again took the lead with two runs in the second before WashU was able to put five on the board in the third and an extra run across the plate in the fourth before the game was called after the sixth inning due to rain.

The Tartans got four hits off Abby Graegin early, forcing the Bears to make a pitching change in the second inning. Holly Stoner then shut the Tartans down, scattering two hits with four strikeouts to earn the win. Freshman Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) gave up eight hits and six runs in 2.1 innings of work before McGee relieved her for 3.2 innings.

Freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) and Faille recorded an RBI in the game while Delacruz had a sacrifice bunt.

The Tartans and Bears will close a four-game series on Saturday, April 13 with games at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at UPMC All-American Park.
