Tartans Fall Twice at Geneva

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team traveled to Geneva College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17, falling to the Golden Tornadoes 5-4 in game one and 7-2 in game two. The Tartans are now 9-19 for the season while Geneva moves to 16-14.

Game 1: Geneva 5, Carnegie Mellon 4

The Tartans held a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh when Geneva scored all four runs with two outs to take the win. The game-winning run came off the bat of sophomore Marina Manuppelli when she homered to left field with runners at first and second.

Two runs came across for the Tartans in the third inning, giving them a 2-1 advantage. Freshman center fielder Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) singled up the middle with the bases loaded to plate both runs. Both freshman designated player Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) and freshman second baseman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) reached on singles.

Freshman first baseman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) singled in a run in the fifth inning for the Tartans' 3-1 lead before freshman catcher Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) layed down a squeeze bunt to plate freshman third baseman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) for the fourth run.

Freshman pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) took the loss giving up eight hits while striking out seven.

Game 2: Geneva 7, Carnegie Mellon 2

The Golden Tornadoes jumped on freshman pitcher Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) in the first inning, scoring three runs off six hits while the Tartans committed two errors. The Tartans answered with a run in the second inning when Holquist grounded out to the pitcher scoring Jette-Kouri who singled to left field and advanced to third on a double by Pederson.

Geneva added runs in the fourth and fifth innings with two in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. The Tartans' final run came in the seventh when Faille doubled in freshman Agnes Zhou (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) who pinch ran for freshman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King ) after Johnson hit a pinch hit single up the middle.

The Tartans will next host University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent 21st-ranked Brandeis University (22-1-1, 7-1) on Friday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
