Tartans Win Series Opener Against #20 Brandeis

(TRAFFORD, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team gave 20th-ranked Brandeis University its second loss of the season with a 2-1 win to start the four-game series on Friday, April 19. With the second game being postponed until Sunday, April 21, the Tartans are now 10-19 overall and 3-10 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Judges move to 21-2-1 and 7-2.

Freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) earned the win on the mound for the Tartans giving up two hits and striking out seven. Both hits by the Judges came in the seventh inning when two doubles were laced down the left field line to start the inning. McGee then closed out the inning with a fly out to center, a pop up to first base and a light line drive to the mound for the final out.

The Tartans scored two in the bottom of the first inning when freshman third baseman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) grounded to shortstop and reach on a throwing error. Freshman shortstop Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) scored from third after reaching on an infield single and moving to third on a single through the right side by freshman designated player Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge). Jette-Kouri then touched home after the throwing error by the shortstop.

McGee and freshman catcher Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) also recorded singles in the game as the Tartans left five runners on base.
