(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team recorded a season-high number of hits in a doubleheader split at Washington and Jefferson College on Tuesday, April 23. The Tartans won game one 17-7 behind a season-high 23 hits before dropping the second game 3-2 to move to 11-23 for the year.
Game 1: Carnegie Mellon 17, W&J 7
The Presidents led 6-1 after the second inning before the Tartans scored three in the third and then seven in the fourth to lead 11-6. W&J plated one run in the seventh but Tartans held them scoreless the rest of the way while scoring another six runs.
Eight Tartans recorded multiple hits in the game with freshman first baseman Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) going 4-of-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman pitcher Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) earned the win on the mound and had three hits in four at bats with two walks. Leadoff hitter freshman Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) reached base five times with two hits, a walk and two hit by pitches.
Others recording three hits were freshman Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge), freshman Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) and freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake). Freshman Agnes Zhou (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) was 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning.
Game 2: W&J 3, Carnegie Mellon 2
The Presidents scored two unearned runs in the second inning off freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) and put a third across the plate in the sixth inning which held up as the Tartans scored two in the top of the seventh but couldn't complete the rally.
Hu and Zhou each recorded two hits in the game with Zhou hitting a two-run double in the seventh inning.
The Tartans will next travel to New York City, New York, for their final games of the season to face New York University for four University Athletic Association (UAA) games. Play is set to begin on Friday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Fordham University.
