(BRONX, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team closed its inaugural season with a series split after a doubleheader split with New York University on Sunday, April 28. The Tartans earned a 13-25 overall record and 5-15 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA) following a 6-1 game-one victory and 10-8 game-two loss.
Game 1: Carnegie Mellon 6, NYU 1
The Tartans took a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning before adding one more in the seventh for the final 6-1 score. Along the way, the Tartans had 11 hits, forced the Violets into two errors and freshman Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) earned her eighth win of the year with seven additional strikeouts while surrendering just two hits.
Five Tartans had two hits in the game with both freshman Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) and McGee collecting two RBIs apiece. Song hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning, recording both of her RBIs in the plate appearance. McGee had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and an RBI double in the seventh to go with a single in the fifth.
Game 2: NYU 10, Carnegie Mellon 8
New York scored five runs in the second inning before the Tartans pulled it to 5-4 in the top of the fourth by taking advange of three hits and two NYU errors to plate three runners. Freshman Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) doubled to right center with the bases loaded to score the final two runs of the half inning.
NYU responded in its half of the fourth inning by knocking in five runs on four hits to go ahead 10-4. The Tartans chipped away at the lead in the final game of the season, scoring one in the fifth and three more in the sixth before Olivia Mould was able to get Song to foul out for the final out of the game with a runner on base.
"I'm so incredibly proud of this team," said head coach Monica Harrison. "We accomplished a lot in this inaugural season and laid the foundation for successful seasons to come. We, as a team, are looking forward to a little time off then back to work in the off season to pay dues for the season to come. We have a great group that will be that much better and stronger with a year of experience."
