Tartans Hit Three Home Runs in Two-Game Sweep at Pitt-Greensburg

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball program opened its third season with a sweep of Pitt-Greensburg, hitting three home runs in an 18-0 second-game win while winning the first game 8-5. Junior Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) earned the win in relief for the Tartans in the first game while freshman Amanda Smith (New Cumberland, Pa. / Trinity) pitched the shutout for her first collegiate win in the second game.

Game 1 - Tartans 8 Pitt-Greensburg 5

Sophomore Tessa Bruneau (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run batted in for her second career game with three hits. Junior Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) had a two-RBI double in the fourth inning when the Tartans scored six runs with two outs to take a 6-2 lead.

The Panthers cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but the Tartans answered with one run apiece in the final two innings, the final run on a sacrifice fly by junior Io Jette-Kouri ( Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) that scored Bruneau who led off the inning with a double.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, the Tartans recorded the final out following a sacrifice fly to center field when Bruneau's throw to third put out Hannah Corvin attempting to tag up on the play.

Schwartz relieved junior Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) in the fourth inning and scattered fourth hits in four innings to earn the victory. McGee struck out eight batters in her three innings of work.

 

Game 2 - Tartans 18 Pitt-Greensburg 0

Three different players hit the ball out of the park for the Tartans with junior Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) crushing a three-run shot in the fifth inning to go with an RBI triple in the fourth inning. Freshman Kiera Boucher () and sophomore Isabel Bermudez (Austin, Texas / Dripping Springs) each picked up their first career home run with both coming in the first inning, as the Tartans took a 4-0 lead.

The Tartans broke the game open in the second inning with eight runs off three hits and two errors by the Panthers. Sophomore Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) and Scheinman each had a two-RBI single in the inning while sophomore Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) started the scoring with an RBI single.

Smith scattered five hits in her collegiate debut while striking out six for the shutout.

 

The Tartans will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 20 at home with a doubleheader against Hiram College beginning at 1:00 p.m. at UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania.
