Tartans Split Doubleheader at Penn State Behrend

(ERIE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team traveled to northwestern Pennsylvania for a doubleheader against Penn State Behrend on Monday, April 5. The Tartans were victorious in game one by a 6-2 score with the Lions coming from behind to win 5-4 in five innings due to darkness in game two. The Tartans are now 6-5-1 for the season.

Game 1 - Tartans 6 Behrend 2

Junior Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) led the Tartans with three hits in three at bats while junior Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) was 2-for-4 and sophomore Isabel Bermudez (Austin, Texas / Dripping Springs) was 2-for-3. Freshman Kiera Boucher (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) picked up three RBIs for the game while Faille and Bermudez each had a double.

The Tartans scored in the top of the first inning when Hu singled up the middle to plate junior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) who led off the game with a single to shortstop. Bermudez led of the second inning with a double to left center, advanced to third on a ground out by junior Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) and scored on a single by Faille. Boucher then tripled to center field for her first RBI of the game.

Carnegie Mellon expanded the lead to five in the top of the fifth inning. McGee led off with an infield single. Junior Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) pinch ran for McGee, stole second, and advanced to third on a single to right field by Faille. Boucher hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Scheinman and Faille scored on an infield ground out by Song.

Behrend plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and Faille and Boucher went to work again at the plate to score the team's sixth run of the game. Faille led off with a double to left center, stole third and scored on Boucher's ground out to second.

McGee finished the game in the circle by scattering three hits and striking out eight for her third straight victory.

 

Game 2 - Behrend 5 Tartans 4

Boucher continued her impressive day with two more hits in the second game including her second triple of the day while junior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) singled in two runs for the game. Sophomore Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, and scored a run.

The Tartans held a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning with darkness setting in. The Lions rallied for four hits in the inning and scored two to take the 5-4 lead and win the game.

 

The Tartans will next host Pitt-Greensburg for two games on Saturday, April 10 beginning at 1:00 p.m. and then Hiram College for two games on Sunday, April 11 also beginning at 1:00 p.m.
