Delacruz Leads Tartans at Plate and in Circle Against Allegheny

(MEADVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team moved to 12-5-1 for the year after sweeping a doubleheader at Allegheny College on Tuesday, April 27 after more than a week off from action. The Tartans took game one by a 12-8 score behind the pitching and offense from junior Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) while freshman Addy Sewack (Needham, Mass. / Noble and Greenough) hit the first home run of her career to help the team to an 8-2 game two win.

Game 1 - Tartans 12 Allegheny 8

Delacruz earned the win in the circle and was perfect at the plate with four hits in four at bats with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the team in game one. The junior put the Tartans on the board first with an RBI single in the second inning and then scored on sophomore Tessa Bruneau's (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) triple to left field which scored two others. Delacruz doubled in two runs in the third inning to make the score 6-1, singled to left in the fifth inning to knock in another run, and scored the 11th run of the game for the Tartans in the seventh inning after singling up the middle with one out.

Bruneau was the only other Tartan to have multiple hits in the game with a triple and a single while junior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) had a double.

In the circle, Delacruz scattered 10 hits while surrendering all eight runs through six innings for her first win of the season. Sophomore Adriana Agosta (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) entered in the seventh inning and struck out one while stranding two on base to close the game.

Game 2 - Tartans 8 Allegheny 2

Sewack led the offense with two RBIs off a double and a solo home run while freshman Kiera Boucher (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) was three-for-four at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Freshman Amanda Smith (New Cumberland, Pa. / Trinity) entered the game in relief of Agosta in the first inning and pitched 5.2 innings to earn the victory, her fourth of the season, with a career-best 10 strikeouts.

Sophomore Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) singled in the first run of the game for the Tartans in the first inning with a drive up the middle. Junior Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) doubled in Pederson in the second inning after Pederson tripled for the third time this season to spark at four-run inning for the Tartans. With a 6-1 lead in hand, junior Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) put a bunt down to first base in the fifth inning to score junior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) who entered as a pinch runner for Pederson who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Sewack then homered in the seventh to finish the scoring for the Tartans in the seventh inning.

The Tartans will next travel to Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 29.
