Tartans Nearly Steal Two at Occidental to Open Spring Trip in California

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team opened its spring trip in California with a split at Occidental College after nearly coming back from a 9-3 deficit in the second game before falling 11-10. The Tartans took the first game by a 7-5 score and are now 3-2 overall.

Game 1 - Win, 7-5

Senior Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) entered the game in the third inning with a 2-1 lead and scattered six hits while giving up four runs to earn a 7-5 victory, her first of the season.

The Tartans trailed 3-2 before scoring three runs in the fifth inning and another two in the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Occidental in the sixth inning made it 7-4 with a ground out but Schwartz struck out the last batter with runner on second to finish the game.

Offensively, freshman Libby Eichberger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) was 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored with five other players knocking out one hit each. Senior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) hit a double in the second inning that scored two runs.

Game 2 - Loss, 11-10

In game two, the Tartans recorded 14 hits and scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 10-9 lead. There were six hits for the Tartans in the seventh inning starting with a single by Eichberger to lead off the inning. Senior Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) later recorded an RBI single and scored on a single by senior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford).

A pitching change by Occidental happened before senior Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) hit an RBI single to third base. With two outs, Eichberger extended the inning with her second hit of the frame that scored two more runs to tie the game. After a walk to freshman Allie Rome (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro South), freshman Maya Goodwin (Camden, N.J. / Leap Academy) knocked in a run with an infield hit.

Occidental was able to score twice with one out in the bottom of the inning to take the walk off win.

The Tartans will next play Redlands on Sunday, March 6, for a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m. PST.
