Tartans Drop Two to WashU

(TRAFFORD, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) for a series-opening doubleheader on Friday, April 15 at its home field in Trafford, Pennsylvania. The Tartans dropped both games and are now 14-14 overall and 5-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Game 1 - Loss 4-2

Senior Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) recorded two RBIs with a double and a single to lead the Tartans offensively. Hu's double came in the seventh inning with two outs but she was stranded at second when senior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) drove a fly ball to center field that was tracked down for the final out. Senior Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) also had two hits in the game.

Game 2 - Loss 6-0

The Tartans were knocking on the door in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) broke up the potential no-hitter with a single to lead off the inning. A walk to freshman Libby Eichberger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) put runners on first and second before Hu grounded into a fielder's choice that erased Song. After a strikeout, the Bears' right fielder made a diving grab in foul territory to strand the runners.

That defensive effort by the Bears led to their first runs of the game when right fielder Oliva Craycraft tripled to left center to score Erin Reardon who led off the fifth inning with a bunt single. Craycraft later scored when she evaded a tag at the plate when Katie Gould grounded into a fielder's choice to second base.

The Tartans had hits in both the fifth and the sixth innings but were unable to capitalize.

The Bears added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to earn the 6-0 victory.

The series is scheduled to continue on Saturday, April 16 with one game at 12:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 17 with the final game scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
