(HARMONY, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team concluded its regular-season home schedule at Seneca Valley Hight School with a win and a loss to Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, April 17, winning the second game of the doubleheader for the nine-member senior class that was the first recruiting class in program history. The Tartans are now 15-15 for the season and 6-9 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
Game 1 - Loss 12-2
The Bears had the hot bats to start the day, as they knocked out 13 hits that led to 12 runs to help senior Madison Denton pick up her ninth win of the year. The Tartans had seven hits for the game and scored their two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Erika Heffernen (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) tripled in senior Meghan Holquist (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron) and junior Emily Finger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) with two outs.
Holquist and senior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) each had two hits in the game.
Game 2 - Win 3-2
The Tartans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Finger put down a bunt with runners at first and third with two outs. The pitcher's throw to first was wide and senior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford), who reached with a one-out double, crossed the plate for the Tartan run.
Carnegie Mellon added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Maya Goodwin (Camden, N.J. / Leap Academy) drove the ball to deep left field for a triple that scored freshman Libby Eichberger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) and Song who each reached base via singles.
Sophomore Amanda Smith (New Cumberland, Pa. / Trinity), who retired the side in four of the first five innings, gave up the first hit of the game for the Bears in the sixth inning. After Smith got out of the sixth with no runs scored, the Bears strung together three hits to start the seventh and plated two runs with no outs. Smith was then able to strike out the final three batters to record her fifth win of the season.
The Tartans will conclude the UAA season with a three-day, four-game series at Case Western Reserve University starting Friday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m.
