Tartans Split Opening Day Action

(WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team opened the 2023 season with a 3-2 victory against Calvin University (5-2) and a 1-0 loss to Moravian University (7-3) on Friday, March 3 at The Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida.

Against Calvin

  • The Tartans took a 2-0 lead with runs in the third inning and added to their lead with one run in the fourth.
  • Calvin made it 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth and later scored another in the bottom of the sixth before the freshman Grace Fujino entered in the seventh to shut down the side and earn the save.
  • Sophomore Libby Eichberger collected two hits.
  • Junior Kiera Boucher knocked in the first run with a single to the pitcher.
  • Senior Emily Finger recorded an RBI in the third inning on a fielder's choice.
  • Sophomore Allie Rome hit in the third run after sophomore Abbey Reese singled to start the inning, stole second with one out, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored when Rome reached on an error.
  • Junior Amanda Smith earned the win after surrendering seven hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings of work.

Against Moravian

  • Freshman Haley Pucci struck out seven batters and surrendered one unearned run in a complete game no-hitter for her first appearance as a Tartan.
  • Moravian scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning when the leadoff batter worked a full count into a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error. She would later score on a sacrifice fly to left field.
  • The Tartans had six hits in the game with freshman Kira Monji recording a double and a single.
  • The Tartans also turned a double play when Pucci fielded a bunt, threw out the batter, and Rome doubled off the runner rounding second.

Notes

  • Pucci's no-hitter is the second in program history with the first coming in the program's first year (2019) by Scotty McGee in the team's 10th game of the season.
