(STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University's softball team played a second doubleheader against New York University on Staten Island, New York, on Sunday, April 14. The Tartan topped the Violets, 9-3, in the first game with NYU winning the second, 5-2. The Tartans are now 13-11 overall and 7-5 in the UAA while the Violets are 6-20 and 1-11.
Game 1
- The Tartans had five doubles in the game with junior Abbey Reese hitting two.
- Sophomore Kira Monji and Reese were both 3-for-4 at the plate with Reese and sophomore Maya Goodwin knocking in two runs apiece.
- Senior Amanda Smith earned her eighth victory of the season and second of the series, scattering five hits with three strikeouts.
- After NYU scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, the Tartans answered with four runs off five hits in the top of the second. Freshman Allison Li had an RBI single to start the scoring. After junior Emma Martin reached on a bunt single, she scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Jasmine Chao doubled to score Li and Monji singled to score Chao.
- The Tartans added one run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth, and two more in the top of the seventh after NYU plated two runs in the sixth inning.
- The two insurance runs for the Tartans came off the bats of Reese and Li.
Game 2
- CMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore Koko Sagae grounded out to third with senior Kiera Boucher scoring from third.
- The Tartans took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with another RBI by Sagae.
- The Violets scored four runs in the bottom of the third with a double by Alexa Very and a home run by Madi Hand.
- NYU added to their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Margaux Lesser.
Notes
- The seven wins in UAA play is the most in program history for a single season for the Tartans.
- Smith reached the 300 strikeout plateau and now has 302 for her career and is 42 shy of the all-time record.
Up Next
The Tartans will next host Washington University in St. Louis for a four-game series starting Friday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Grove City College. The series will then continue with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday at Shady Side Academy Senior School, the Tartans' home field.
