Tartans Four Game Win Streak Snapped

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team had their four-game winning streak snapped by John Carroll University at home on Saturday, 70-54. The Tartans are now 5-2 on the year while the Blue Streaks remained undefeated at 5-0.

John Carroll led 13-7 after the games leading scorer Beth Switzler scored on back-to-back possessions but the Tartans answered with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game at the 13:07 mark. Sophomore Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) started the run with a three-pointer while freshman Mathea Tenwalde (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) hit a layup off an assist from Caufield at the end.

The Tartans then extended the run to go ahead 21-17 as Caufield had her hand in another five points, scoring a jumper and assisting on a three-pointer by freshman Amanda McHenry (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville).

A timeout by John Carroll followed as well as an 18-13 run to close the half by the Blue Streaks to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.

Two free throws by Caufield and a jumper by freshman Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) brought the Tartans within five points at the beginning of the second half but that was as close as the team would get as the Blue Streaks went on to the 16-point victory.

The Tartans were led by senior Emily Peel's (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) 12 points but she was kept off the free throw line where she averages eight attempts a game and shoots 84.6%. Caufield tied a season-high with nine points as Poss tallied eight points and eight rebounds. Senior Tori Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Spingside) led on the boards with 11 rebounds, including five offensive.

The Blue Streaks saw Melissa Spahar drop in 24 points and grab 16 rebounds while Switzler finished with 20 points. The Tartans did hold leading scorer Erin Mog to zero points on 0-for-9 shooting.

The Tartans will be in action again on Tuesday, December 4 when they host Allegheny College at 6:00 p.m.
