Tartans Battled Hard at New York

(NEW YOR, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped its first University Athletic Association (UAA) contest Sunday, January 13 with a 64-57 setback at New York University.  The Tartans as now 10-4, 2-1 while the Violets improve to 8-6, 1-2.

New York hit the first basket and held the lead the rest of the half. The home team was ahead 33-21 with five minutes left in the first stanza. The Tartans closed the frame on an 11-2 run, cutting the deficit to 35-32.  Sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) scored the visitor's last five points of the half including a trey with 27 seconds left.

Freshman Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) drained the first two shots of the second half to give the Tartans their first lead of the contest at 36-35 a minute in.  The lead was short-lived, as Megan Dawe converted a layup the next trip down the court for NYU and the momentum stayed with the home team. NYU scored 10 straight taking a 45-36 lead with 12:13 to play in the contest.

Carnegie Mellon closed the gap to five on two occasions in the closing minute of play, but that is as close as the score came with the Violets taking a 64-57 decision from the Tartans.

Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Poss was the only other Tartan to score in double figures with 11 points.  

For NYU, Dawe, Riley Wurtz and Cassidy Jourdan finished with 14 points each while Melissa Peng had 10 points.  

The Tartans will continue UAA play on Friday, January 18 as they entertain the University of Rochester.  Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
