Tartans Outrebound 15th Opponent in Setback at #12 Washington

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to play #12 Washington University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, February 1.   The Tartans fell by the score 85-54.  The loss moves Carnegie Mellon's record to 11-8, 3-5, as the Bears are now 16-3, 6-2.

The Bears made their first four shots and jumped out to a 10-0 lead three minutes in.  Sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) then scored five straight points to cut the deficit in half, but Washington continued its hot shooting and pushed the lead back to double digits at 20-9.

Senior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) made the score 22-13 at the 10:28 mark, but then the Bears held Carnegie Mellon to two field goals the rest of the first half.  During the stretch the home team used runs of 13-2 and 11-4 and claimed a 49-21 lead at the break.

Washington started the second frame on a 10-2 run extending its halftime lead to 59-23 at the 16:34 mark. Carnegie Mellon used a 10-0 run halfway through the second half to make the score 72-42, but the Bears continued to control the contest winning 85-54.

Carnegie Mellon shot 29% from the floor to Washington's 44%.  The Tartans held the edge on the glass for the 15th time this season, outrebounding the Bears 44-43, with Peel leading the team with seven.  West led the Tartans with 15 points, including an 8-10 effort from the line, while Peel added 12 in the setback.  

Jordan Thompson led the Bears with 16 points as Mellissa Gilkey and Alyssa Johanson also scored in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.  
 
Carnegie Mellon travels to the Windy City Sunday to play the University of Chicago.  Tip is set for 2:00 p.m. CT in UAA action.
