Tartans Late Run Falls Short at Chicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Chicago, Ill., Sunday, February 3 and played the Maroons of the University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Tartans dropped a 76-60 decision to the Maroons and move to 11-9, 3-6 while Chicago is now 7-13, 3-6.

Chicago used a 14-0 run over an eight minute span to take a 24-6 lead at the 8:13 mark of the first half.  The Tartans closed the gap late in the half when they scored eight straight with four coming off the hands of freshman Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) before going into the locker room down 36-24.

The Tartans shot 27% from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play while the Maroons shot 52%.

After falling behind 44-25 to start the half, Carnegie Mellon used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 46-35 with 12:50 to play.  Over the next three minutes, the Maroons built their lead to 54-38, but junior Jacquie Shaw's (Portland, Ore./Grant) three layups in a 30 second span pulled the Tartans to within single digits at 54-45.

A minute later, Chicago started an 11-2 run to push its lead to 69-51 and went on for the 76-60 victory. The Tartans improved on their shooting in the second half as they put in 39% of their attempts and finished shooting 33% for the game to the Maroons 50%.

Shaw led four Tartans in double figures with 17 points.  Poss, sophomore Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and freshman Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn.) each had 10 points in the setback.  

Chicago's Paige Womack led all scorers with 20 points.  Claire Devaney and Ellie Greiner ended with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Carnegie Mellon will host Brandeis University on Friday, February 8 at Skibo Gymnasium with tip set for 6:00 p.m.
