Tartans Down Franciscan in Second Day of Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Classic

(PITTSBURGH Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team competed in the second day of the Carnegie Mellon/DoubleTree Classic, as the Tartans ran away with a 108-53 victory over Franciscan University Saturday, November 16.  For the second straight game, the Tartans were led by four players with double figures in scoring. The win starts the Tartans season at 2-0 while the Barons move to 0-2.

Carnegie Mellon started the game on a 13-0 run over the first 4:36. During the stretch senior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) and sophomore Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) accounted for 11 points, Poss six and Shaw five.  The Barons then scored nine straight to pull within four points, but the Tartans exploded with a 27-7 run and led 40-16 with five minutes to play in the first half.

The Tartans led 55-26 at the break thanks to the stellar play of freshman Sade Idera (Morris Plains, N.J./Morris Catholic). Idera led with 18 first half points as she shot 7-of-10 from the floor including 4-of-6 from long range.  Poss ended the frame with 12 points and 11 rebounds.    

Carnegie Mellon opened the second half on a 12-2 run, during the spurt freshman forward Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) scored six of her 18 points.  The Tartans led by as many as 58 before winning 108-53.

Carnegie Mellon shot 56% from the floor while Franciscan shot 27%. Carnegie Mellon dominated on the glass hauling in 63 boards to Franciscan's 29. Idera recorded a game-high 26 points while Poss notched her third career double-double tying a career-high with 20 points and hauling in a career-best 15 rebounds.   The fourth Tartan in double figures was junior Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) who scored 18 points.   

The Tartans will be back on the hardwood Tuesday, November 19 as they traveled to Grove City to play the Wolverines.  Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
