Tartans Keep Rolling With 90-75 Victory at Grove City

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team reached the 90-point mark for the third straight game to open the 2013-14 season, as they defeated the Wolverines of Grove City College 90-75 on Tuesday, November 19.  The Tartans third victory came at Grove City College Arena as they remain unbeaten on the young season and the Wolverines fall to 1-2.

With 12:31 remaining in the first half, junior Gabrielle West's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) three-point bucket gave Carnegie Mellon a 24-13 lead which was the Tartans largest of the first half.  West's trey capped off a 10-2 run for the visitor's.

Grove City responded scoring 14 of the next 16 points to grab a 27-26 lead four minutes later.  The Wolverines held the lead for 16 seconds before junior Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) hit a long range jumper to give Carnegie Mellon a  28-26 lead with 6:13 to play in the first half.

Carnegie Mellon maintained the lead the rest of the half a took a 42-35 lead into the break following yet another long ball by sophomore Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) with 18 ticks left in the half.

The Tartans were able to secure the lead the entire second half. West's fourth three-point basket of the game with 8:11 to play gave Carnegie Mellon a 70-58 lead, as the Tartans continued to hold the double digit lead the rest of the contest.  

Grove City shot 49% from the field while the Tartans shot 48%. Carnegie Mellon held a 42-37 rebound advantage while turning 23 Grove City turnovers into 30 points.

West led all scorers tying a career-high with 24 points.  The junior ended the came with six triples, one off her single-game school record.  Freshman Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) recorded her first 20 point game of her career, as she shot 8-of-12  from the floor to end with 20 points.  Poss and senior Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) both dropped in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.  Sophomore Liza Otto (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) tied a career-high with seven assists in the win.

Grove City was led by Cayley McClean with 15 points while Kelsey Shirey had 14 and Kathryn Erbelding added 11.

Carnegie Mellon will be back on the court Thursday, November 21 when they travel to Meadville, Pa. to play the Gator of Allegheny College.  Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
