Tartans Win at Waynesburg Behind Three Double Figure Scorers

(WAYNESBURG Pa.) – Three players score in double figures as the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with an 80-67 victory at Waynesburg University on Saturday, November 15.

Carnegie Mellon made its first four shots of the game and led 8-1 two minutes into the contest and never looked back.  The Tartans built a 15 point (24-9) lead, their largest of the first half, at the 12 minute mark on a three-pointer by sophomore Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)).  Over the next four minutes both teams went on a scoring drought before Waynesburg rattled off seven straight to cut the Tartans lead to 24-16 with 6:33 to play in the half.  Hudepohl connected on two shots to push the Tartans lead back to double figures, but the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 7-3 run to trail 29-23 at the break.

The Tartans started the second half on a 9-0 run and maintained a double figure lead the rest of the way.  The Cardinal and Gray's largest lead came with 2:31 left in the contest when senior Chandler Caufield's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) jumper went through the net to make the score 74-54.

Carnegie Mellon ended the game shooting 45.9% from the floor to Waynesburg's 33.3%.  The Tartans hauled in 46 rebounds to dominate the glass as the Yellow Jackets managed only 27 boards.

Sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) led all scorers with 23 points.  Hudepohl finished with 17 in her Tartans debut while junior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) added 15.  Murphy and Poss each finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds apiece.  Hudepohl dished out a game-best eight assists in the win.

Waynesburg was led by Heather Davis' 21 points.  Haley Delaney and Katie Gehlmann also scored in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

Carnegie Mellon returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, November 19 when they open home play entertaining the Gators of Allegheny College.  Tip is set for 6:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
