(PITTSBURGH Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped it first contest of the season on Saturday, November 22, falling 77-71 to the visiting Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. The Tartans are now 3-1 while the Blue Streaks remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Carnegie Mellon grabbed an early 7-6 lead on a jumper by sophomore Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) at the 17:25 mark. Over the next 2:12, John Carroll used a 10-2 run to take a 16-9 advantage. The Blue Streaks maintained their lead until six minutes left in the first half when freshman Kajae Jones (Fairfax, Va./Bishop O'Connell) scored on an up-and-under layup to give the home team a 29-28 edge. The rest of the half saw the lead change hands three times along with four ties before John Carroll went into the break with a 41-38 lead.
John Carroll came out of the break and continued to hold its lead until 5:52 left in the contest, as Tartan sophomore Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) put the Cardinal and Gray on top for the first time since the three minute mark of the first half. Murphy's put-back layup made the score 61-60. The Blue Streaks responded with six straight points and never looked back.
The Tartans shot 49.1% from the floor to the Blue Streaks 38.2%. John Carroll turned 18 Carnegie Mellon turnovers into 21 points while the home team managed just nine points off the visitor's six mishaps.
Murphy led the Tartans with a season-high 24 points while Hudepohl was the only other Tartan in double figures with 17. Hudepohl compiled her second double-double of the season by hauling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Both Murphy and Hudepohl added three blocks. Junior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md.) dished out a career-best five assists in the setback.
The Blue Streaks were led by Katlyn Spahar's game-high 36 points while Beth Switzler added 20 and grabbed nine rebounds.
Carnegie Mellon will travel to Penn State Altoona on Monday, November 24 for a 6:00 p.m. tip with the Lions.
